HE Perućica – Reconstruction and Modernization, Phase II

Project Details

Located near Nikšić, Montenegro, the Perućica Hydropower Plant is the oldest large-scale hydropower facility in the country, in operation since 1960. With an installed capacity of 307 MW and an average annual generation of 900 GWh, it remains one of Montenegro’s key energy assets, utilizing the waters of the Zeta River basin. The ongoing modernization project includes the installation of an additional A8 turbine unit (58 MW), further increasing the plant’s total capacity and operational efficiency.

As part of the Phase II reconstruction and modernization, IEE took part as a subcontractor for mechanical works, with responsibilities also extending to design, execution, and preparation of technical documentation. The works include renewal and automation of closing mechanisms, hydraulic units, control systems, and mechanical structures across multiple components of the hydropower system — from intake structures and accumulation facilities to penstocks and turbine equipment.

The project remains in progress, with the main construction phase completed and preparation for further modernization steps underway. Following the completion of this phase, there is potential for continued collaboration in the upcoming stages of the Perućica Hydropower Plant’s long-term revitalization — a project of strategic importance for Montenegro’s energy system and its renewable power production.
